How to survive on Twitter

So everybody these days gives advices on how to build a community on twitter or how to attract like a bunch of followers. So now is my turn. I will not help you get 2000+ in a couple of hours but I will help you enjoy it.
1. Install a program like Tweetdeck or TwitterFox, because standard twitter is not convenient. Now that you have installed a program you can always see what everybody says and understand how one should post on twitter, or as everybody calls it - tweet.
2. Tweet about the things that have a buzz, there is a special option in tweet deck that shows that shows the most popular topics that are discussed right now, or you can go to twitter search and find them they are a bit delayed there.
3. When you find yourself understanding the game, you will start posting stuff. The easiest way is retweet. If you follow people that are interesting enough you will soon notice thet you want to send them @ messages( Guy Kawasaki explains it here see tip 2), do this.
4. Soon people will slowly atart following you, and you will like it for sure, follow them back if they don't start spamming you. Actually sometimes a spammer could be see long before you start receiving his updates. Like a guy with a name Supersales.com should already make you think if he worth following.
5. If you follow a person and he(she) during two days doesn't start following you and becomes or is not interesting and plus to unfollow him(er). this will help you keep you in balance.
6. Follow online marketers they are generally good guys (if not spammers) with good followig/followers balance(like 2431/2398). They will most likely follow you back.

My web experience

I've been using social networking services for about 1,5 month, so that is unprofessional, overview of some services that caught my attention. I'm not an addict of one particular, so don't wait to find something radical new, but If this will entertain someone I did well enough.

My Space

My Space is the first social network I started to use, it is also the most popular one. For long time I thought that social networking meant hanging out on My Space. The site all about fancy stuff, glamorous pictures, multimedia. Using it is like going to Times Square in New York. Every kind of stuff is here, and there is MTV somewhere behind the corner.

You can put anything you want on the page, and it will get stretched like a sock of a good kid on Christmas. I wander who's got the world longest one. It could be a subject for Guinness world record book.

I swear, I always try to network there, but when I see the an attractive banner or some promo a can't resist and click to see what's behind it. There is a lot of groups on My Space, sorted by interests, you can join one to ask for a business advice, promote your products, spam group members, meet people with similar interests, earn money at home, ask to vote for you on '08 elections - anything your fantasy allows you to do.( And when you're tired of the American version there is My Space Latino to try)).

Facebook

Facebook is the second most popular social network. It is not as shining as My Space but it is very convenient to use, your page doesn't become a mess when you put too much stuff there. Unlike My Space, it has not many customizing options, but you won't get lost there. I still don't see the difference between my home page and profile as it seen by other users, I just write everything everywhere and see it appear.

Adding a friend on Facebook is very fast, you can just move your mouse over friends suggestions, click the left button and strike ENTER on your keyboard. Also you can become a fan off some odd stuff or become a member of a group with funny name, for example I've become a member of one with the name “Derek Zoolander Center For Kids Who Can't Read Good and Wanna Learn to Do Other Stuff Good Too”. Maybe that is a serious group, but the movie made me laugh a lot.

Twitter

Now let's tweet about twitter, yesterday I was visiting monitter and one guy there told me that I should use qwitter. It is a fast growing thing and it got about 4 million users in a short period of time. Awesome, at last I can start blogging regularly ( OK it's micro-blogging but I don't care). So you can hide from twitter on facebook, but it will get you inevitably. It is easy to use and it gives you some kind of comfort. What does that mean? For example a profile of famous Israeli politician Benjamin Netanyahu, who I follow on twitter or a profile of Evan Williams, twitter founder, both look pretty much the same as mine. It's nice to know, that not being one of the major players you can be you can be kinda equal to those big ones.(Yeah, when I started on My Space I was like “wow!” looking at, for example, Scott Storch page)

If huge articles drive you mad and you don't want to waste time wondering if there is something interesting at the end, twitter is a wonderful way to monitor trends on the web and blogs, just follow people who tweet about the things you interested in and read articles they refer to. Or don't read...

StumbleUpon (Oh, it comes with toolbar!)

I always push this green and blue button when I don't know what to do,it is kinda amusing, you know. While you're reading this I'm maybe stumbling(a kind of web surfing, when you view pages that were bookmarked by the users of Stumble Upon community,). This is a damn addictive thing. If you wanna know why, just stumble through the pages with topic “Stumble Upon”.

Let's compare two ways to get the information on the internet: when you know exactly what you need, you go to Yahoo, type in your search and get lost in results. The other case is you don't know what you need, stumble and discover the sites that are interesting for you. There is also a good feature when you enter search or tag in the stumbleupon toolbar of your browser, it is like jumping through Google or Yahoo results, but the results are provided by users not by the machine, and this is in some cases the best way to educate yourself. For example, starting to use twitter, I was to lazy for me to read tutorials, so I just stumbled through the pages with a tag “twitter” and understood how other people use it and how it works.

You can promote your own website there, just give it a thumb up, write a review and get enough friends to visit it. If someone with a big StumbleUpon credibility gives it a thumb up or even writes a review, your site will get a traffic boost.
